The goal of establishing a Language Data Commons of Australia (LDaCA) is to consolidate these efforts into a nationally integrated research infrastructure. This infrastructure will be strategically important for the Australian research community and for translational research related to national interests. LDaCA aims to serve as a sustainable long-term repository for the storage and curation of existing language data collections of national significance.
To achieve these objectives, the project aims to:

Establish a governance board representing key stakeholders.

Develop a comprehensive policy framework for access to language data.

Create a shared technical infrastructure across institutions.

Develop a portal for the discovery and access to language data.

Engage researchers and communities to secure and make accessible Australia’s linguistic heritage.

Australian Text Analytics Platform (ATAP)
Scheme: Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) Platforms Program
Role: Steering committee & C & Chair of teh User Advisory group (Project lead: Michael Haugh)
Collaborators: Various Australian & international stakeholders (researchers and institutions, e.g. universities, AARNet, etc.)
Funding period: 2021-2023
(ATAP has been integrated into LDaCA as of 2024 (LDaCA-ATAP)).

Description
Text analysis in Australian research is conducted either at a basic, generic level (using standard packages like Antconc or Voyant Tools) or at a highly specialized level with custom code. The goal of ATAP is to fill the gap between these two approaches, where tools are needed that are more powerful than those at the basic end of the continuum but more general than those at the highly specialized end. A key outcome of the project will be the development of an integrated, notebook-based platform for processing and extracting text data.

As project lead I have acquired funding for the following project(s)

Fucking Twitter: a contrastive network and text analytic approach to curse word use in the Australian, British, and US American Twitterspheres
Volume: 15,075.88 AUD
Funding body: Digital Cultures and Societies Hub (UQ)
Role: Project lead
Collaborators: Marissa Takahashi (Australian Digital Observatory, Queensland University of Technology, QUT), Mikko Laitinen (University of Eastern Finland), Paula Rautionaho (University of Eastern Finland), michael Haugh (UQ), Sam Hames (UQ)
Duration: 8/2022 – 7/2023

Description
This project aims to empirically assess the assumption that Australians swear frequently by comparing Twitter data from Australia, the UK, and the US. It develops a prototype using computational methods to clean Twitter data, detect and extract swear words, and analyze their frequency and usage contexts. The study provides insights into cultural differences and discursive settings for swearing, combining network and text analytics for a comprehensive view. The project also explores how sociological data can enrich social media analysis, laying the groundwork for future studies on online polarization. The research team includes experts from UQ’s LADAL, the Australian Text Analytics Platform, the Digital Observatory at QUT, and FIN-CLARIAH at the University of Eastern Finland.

VowelChartProject
Volume: 77,860 € (3rd phase: 42,960 €, 2nd phase: 22,900 €, 1st phase: 12,000 €)
Funding body: BMBF (via L3Prof, UHH)
Role: Project lead & Principal investigator (PI)
Duration: 9/2016 – 9/2018

Description
The VowelChartProject extracted vowel formants from German, Russian, and Spanish learners of English using PRAAT and R to investigate where, why, and to what extent English learners differ from native English speakers in vowel production and word-final devoicing.
